The
Union County Rugby Football Clubs Old Boy team dusted off
their boots and came out of retirement to retake the rugby
field in a bruising game against the Morris Old Boys.
While
these players aged 35 may be playing beyond their prime fitness
days, this is made up by the experience they bring to game.
One thing that does not diminish with these players over the
years is their competitive drive. Players can often be heard
shouting at their teammates while their thunderous tackles
makes the opposition cringe in horror. For these players,
it is more than just a game it is opportunity to share stories
with old friends, while playing the sport they love with their
wives and kids rooting for them on the sideline.
In
their game against Morris, the Union Old Boys team played
like they did years ago by dominating the game and cruising
to a 48-0 victory. Unlike a traditional game of rugby, this
game was played with three twenty minute halves. Union quickly
seized control of the game with two early tries by Eric Kettleson
and Simon Hooks with a conversion and penalty kick by Hooks
gave Union a 15-0 lead at the end of the first half. Unions
unrelenting attack continued into the second half with Mike
Sadowski crossing the try line. Jeff Kelly followed with another
try that was converted by Hooks. Union began the third half
in clear control of the game leading 27-0. In well executed
scoring drive Simon Bintley passed to Daryn Henry who dove
into the try zone. In an equally impressive play Daryn Henry
threw to Jack Zimmerman who fought off several Morris players
to score a try. Simon Hooks then scored a try from inside
his own-half. Hooks good boot continued into the third
half by converting all 3 tries. In the end, the game
brought back memories for the Union Old Boys championship
years by winning 48-0.
Union
Old Boy player Simon Hooks who also coaches for the Mens
team said It was great to brush the cobwebs off the
cleats and take the field with some old friends. It was a
good day out in fine weather capped by a resounding victory.
It was just like the old days except the shirts and shorts
on some players appeared to fit a little more snugly than
in the past!
The
Union old boys look to continue their success with up coming
games against Old Japan and Princeton. For more information
